Apart from the obvious – you want somebody to manage your website because you are too busy – what are the actual benefits of a business owner taking on an SEO agency?
What is SEO?
When you ask somebody, ‘What is your definition of SEO’ they’ll respond saying something like the following:“Eurm, Getting your website found in the search engines”, “increasing website traffic”, “getting the keywords right”, “web optimising” – and if you ask anybody else, they’ll respond by saying “Yeah, what he/she said”. Some people will have tried a bit of SEO themselves and give a more detailed answer, but generally, that’s more or less the responses you’ll get. SEO is about soooo much more than just getting websites found in the search engines and getting the keywords on your site right!
What are the benefits of SEO?
SEO is about using the internet as a marketing tool.. it’s about getting your website ‘just’ right so your website users’ browsing experience is more pleasant so they are more likely to convert into sales/enquiries. Search Engine Optimisation, is about getting your website noticed, having compelling content on your site and expanding your horizons online.
Prime example: Eye for Marketing took on a new client recently who own a large ecommerce site. Their traffic was pretty much non existent and their sales were down.. so, where to start? The website had over 600 products and you had to click about 6-7 times before you got to a product page – so no wonder their sales were down! Once we’d restructured things, their website traffic went up by 10% in just one month!
When taking on an SEO agency, they have to re-analyse your whole site and look at it with new eyes. First of all.. what message are you giving your website visitors? What do you want them to do when they land on your site? Is it clear? Are your website visitors coming to your site and leaving immediately without browsing through your lovely products? If so, why? What’s the navigation doing? There are SO many questions to be asked when starting an SEO project. Most of the time, people who contact me, don’t always realise how much work is involved in de-cluttering and re-structuring their site prior to starting the optimisation!
So, if you’re thinking of taking on an SEO agency, ask them what benefits they will give you… don’t accept answers like ‘We are the best SEO agency in the UK’ or ‘We will get your website on page 1 of all the search engines’.. Those phrases are NOT benefits, they are sales tools – and not always true either! Any agency that makes promises they cannot keep are not worth paying for in my opinion.
